This is some text inside of a div block.

About this course

Join me for an engaging and entertaining deep dive into the ancient world! Starting with the earliest evidence for humanity, we will explore how people around the world have shaped their lives and stories to create the world we live in today. While we will talk about some names and dates, the emphasis is on understanding the threads of history that tie us all together and connect us to the past.  Students will also take part in creating and delivering the lessons to their fellow students on topics that particularly interest them.

What you'll learn

The topics discussed will begin with the earliest evidence for humans and move forward through time. Emphasis will be on worldwide developments and impact, rather than focusing on a single region. As we move around the world, we will explore cross-cultural topics, such as mythology, farming, city-building, and writing. Students will learn also learn about common misconceptions and topics that have seized the worldwide imagination.  Students will also be encouraged to take ownership of their learning and will engage in teaching their felling students on topics that interest them.

Course Topics:

This course will be very student directed.  We will explore topics based on student interest and as such, the schedule will change and adapt over time.  Students that have a particular interest are encouraged to mention it so it can be included!  Topics that might be covered include:

  • Early Humans
  • Villages and the Agricultural Revolution
  • Ancient Egypt
  • Early Mesopotamia and Urbanisation
  • Egyptian and Mesopotamian Mythology
  • Early China
  • Indus Valley
  • Bronze Age Europe
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Rome
  • Classical Mythology
  • Vikings
  • Ancient Polynesia
  • Aztec and Mayan mythology

Every week, students will be introduced to a new time period and we will explore what happened, why, and the impact this had on the wider world. Students will engage in real world activities using common household objects in order to clarify their understanding, as well as discussing how the topic relates to their daily lives. Discussions will be based around maps, photos, and drawings of places, people, and objects from the past, permitting an object-based approach to learning about history.

Every week, students will need a variety of household objects, and should be prepared to check in with Teams in order to ensure they have everything needed for that week’s activities.

Materials & Homework

Students will choose a topic that particularly interests them and will prepare a short presentation on that topic for the lesson where it is discussed.  This will require students to spend some time researching and preparing a short presentation at some point over the course of the term.  This should not require enormous amounts of time and can be scheduled in order to best suit all students and families.
